Description

Objective:

The course objective is to focus on nursing fundamentals, skills, and theoretical knowledge of the unique needs of the elderly as they interact with their environment. Using a systems approach and assessing needs based on Maslow's hierarchy, students learn to plan care for young adults and elderly clients with a variety of conditions. Outside preparation activities include web-based ATI (Assessment Technologies Institute) nurse logic, PN learning systems and practice assessments, and completion of workbook exercises and learning guides.

  • Identify common physical, cognitive, and psychosocial conditions related to aging
  • Apply principles of effective communication, cultural competency, documentation, and client teaching when interacting with client, families, and health care team
  • Discuss loss, grief and death, and principles related to end of life nursing care
  • Explain principles of infection control, standard, and transmission-based precautions
  • Identify safety factors in the health care delivery and in the client's environment
  • Discuss physiological and psychosocial theories of aging
  • Assess client needs using the hierarchy of needs model, within a holistic approach
  • Discuss planning and implementation of EBP nursing, incorporating elements of critical thinking and the nursing process
  • Safely perform basic nursing procedures in providing direct care to assigned clients
  • Solve basic dosage calculation and fluid intake/output problems
  • Administer enteral and parenteral medications observing all basic principles of safe medication administration
