Description

Objective:

The course objective is to focus on advanced topics in procedural coding using CPT and HCPCS code sets. The course concentrates on official coding guidelines, sequencing skills, and use of CPT and HCPCS in healthcare reimbursement as well as prospective payment system theory and methodology.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define medical necessity
  • Differentiate between outpatient coding and inpatient coding
  • List and apply the steps required to properly code emergency department cases
  • Use modifiers which include level I CPT and/or level II HCPCS as dictated by setting
  • Utilize CMS national correct coding initiative (NCCI) edits when assigning to promote national correct coding methodologies and to control improper payments for Medicare part B
  • Apply the inpatient coding process
  • Discuss the healthcare record as a primary source of documentation
  • Describe the classification systems in coding (APC)
  • Describe the prospective payment system
  • Discuss the importance of a corporate compliance plan
  • Describe coding guidelines in the emergency department
  • Assign and sequence the primary CPT procedure code first, followed by applicable additional procedure codes to include modifiers when appropriate
  • Assign APC assignments
  • Apply the outpatient coding process
  • List the steps to follow when coding from medical documentation
  • Accurately apply uniform hospital discharge data set (UHDDS) definitions to principle and secondary procedure
