Description

Objective:

The course objective is to focus on the development of observation, assessment, and documentation skills. Students will demonstrate teaching, adapting, and grading of self-care, work, play, and leisure occupations for individuals with psychosocial challenges. Students gain advanced skills adapting, grading, and delivering therapeutic interventions used to support successful occupational performance. This content is integrated with OT and OTA roles when providing services to individuals, groups and/or populations at risk for or experiencing cognitive, psychosocial, and social disruptors.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Review and acquire a repertoire of intervention strategies needed to address identified occupational disruptions and dysfunctions seen most frequently in individuals with psychosocial and/or cognitive disruption
  • Explain how a variety of physical, social, and psychological life events and circumstances impact the emergence and choice of meaningful occupations
  • Utilize therapeutic principles for selection of and analysis of purposeful activities and occupations to enhance role function in individuals or groups with psychosocial and/or cognitive impairment
  • Exhibit behaviors that reflect therapeutic use of self in individual, dyadic and/or group interactions
  • Analyze components of occupational performance in the areas of self-care, work, play, leisure, education and social participation
  • Relate the effects the environment and community have on the individual and on groups relative to psychosocial dysfunction in a variety of contexts
  • Demonstrate and apply safety awareness procedures with regard to self and others during the group intervention process
  • Reflect the significance of lifestyle balance as a component of health and wellness in the therapeutic activity planning process
  • Perform professional behaviors in all classroom and community learning environments
  • Demonstrate skills and knowledge in oral and written professional documentation and communication
  • Execute and role-play a variety of teaching/learning strategies
  • Critically select, analyze, modify and adapt culturally relevant activities that address acquisition and enhancement of performance abilities contributing to meaningful occupations in life
