Description

Objective:

The course objective is to integrate principles, skills, and concepts previously learned in N101C, N101T, and N104. This course focuses on health care of the medical-surgical client and is grouped according to the concepts and body systems affected. Students will use the nursing process and Maslow's human needs framework to plan and prioritize care of individuals and families as they interact with stressors in their internal and external environment related to medical/surgical conditions. Outside preparation activities include web-based ATI (Assessment Technologies Institute) nurse logic, PN learning systems and practice assessments, and completion of workbook exercises and learning guides.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the etiology, medical, pharmacological, and nursing management of clients with cardiac, respiratory, neurologic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, reproductive, and endocrine related problems, including their needs during peri-operative period
  • Utilize Maslow's hierarchy of needs as a framework in ensuring coordinated care based on the individual client's needs
  • Formulate holistic and organized care plan for various medical-surgical disorders
  • Perform nursing skills independently in providing safe, direct care to a minimum of two clients per shift in the acute or sub-acute health care facility with RN supervision
  • Explain the pathophysiology of cardio-respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, neurologic, and other related medical disorders
  • Apply principles of infection control and safety when implementing nursing interventions, especially in clients who are immune compromised
  • Execute principles of safe medication administration on site or in a controlled setting
  • Recognize legal, ethical, and professional sound nursing practice
