Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide knowledge of the documentation process for occupational therapy assistants including, electronic health records (EHR) systems in health care delivery. Emphasis will be directed toward interdisciplinary use of an EHR to enhance quality and safety in patient care. Students will learn to use EHR software, access a patient account, create a patient file, and to enter and retrieve data.

  • Define Electronic Health Record (EHR) Systems in the context of occupational therapy, discuss why they are important, and the forces in our society driving their adoption
  • Summarize HIPAA privacy and security regulations that are a paramount concern in any medical setting
  • Discuss what is necessary for secure patient-provider communications with use of internet and research tools
  • Describe the role of the occupational therapy assistant in care coordination, case management, and transition services in a variety of practice contexts and service delivery models
  • Describe 3rd party payer systems utilized during the provision of occupational therapy services and documentation for reimbursement of services
  • Explain the components of a supervisory relationship and examine strategies that support successful professional supervision and collaboration
  • Identify strategies for effective, competency-based legal and ethical supervision of non-professional personnel
  • Articulate processes used in resolving personal and organizational ethical dilemmas
  • Recognize EHR concepts, learn to navigate EHR software in both clinic and hospital settings through a series of hands-on experiences
  • Explain the terms used in EHR systems and workflow with EHR systems
  • Recognize ways socio-cultural contexts influence the provision of professional healthcare services
  • Explain how and when to use the consultative process with specific consumers or consumer groups as directed by the occupational therapist
  • Explain the individual and interactive roles of significant governmental and private regulatory agencies
  • Explain how various practice, theory, and clinical/professional reasoning impact the delivery of occupational therapy services to clients, including people, caregivers, families, organizations, populations, and communities
  • Review the systems and structures that create federal and state legislation and regulation and discuss their implications for, and effect on, current occupational therapy practice
  • Demonstrate knowledge of national requirements for credentialing and requirements for licensure, certification or registration under state laws
  • Describe the ongoing responsibility for providing fieldwork education and the criteria for becoming a fieldwork educator
  • Demonstrate professional behaviors in classroom and laboratory settings
