Description

Objective:

The course objective is to focus on advanced critical thinking processes required for delivery of effective and comprehensive OT services. Emphasis is placed on the multi-faceted dimensions of clinical decision making in OT practice through role play, case studies, and critical discussions. Evidence-based resources are integrated into problem-solving processes.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Utilize the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework to determine approaches to occupational therapy interventions
  • Commensurate with the role of the occupational therapy assistant, demonstrate introductory level skills in administering, scoring, interpreting and reporting results of standardized and non-standardized evaluation tools utilized by occupational therapy practitioners
  • Use professional literature and resources to select evidence-based materials that can assist in professional decision making for any step of the occupational therapy process
  • Role-play and experience a variety of teaching/learning strategies
  • Generate professional observations made in practice contexts and report these orally
  • Examine and interpret occupational therapy case materials in order to propose clinical questions and hypothesize needs related to person, environment and context of occupational performance
  • Demonstrate professional behaviors in all classroom and community learning environments
  • Formulate and implement occupational therapy interventions for typical or special populations
  • Examine and analyze the potential influences and effects of cognitive, social or psychological disorder on engagement in meaningful occupation for individuals across the lifespan
  • Evaluate, through active participation, the use of therapeutic activities for the purpose of promoting engagement in meaningful occupations
  • Utilize components of the occupational therapy process in order to compare and contrast effectiveness and outcomes of different interventions
  • Compose a comprehensive SOAP note as documentation of an observed therapeutic intervention session
  • Compare and contrast strategies to prioritize clinical problems and intervention approaches
