Description

Objective:

The course objective is to introduce the student to concepts of personal wellness. Emphasis will include the importance of physical fitness, nutrition, stress management, and disease prevention on occupational performance.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss factors that contribute to premature mortality
  • Explain nutrition and body composition, how it impacts wellness standards, and how food selection is important with dieting
  • Review obesity and its consequences, risk factors, dieting, and eating disorders
  • Explore training principles and relate them to occupational performance
  • Assess the various components of skill-related fitness
  • Identify stress-management techniques in order to engage in successful physical and emotional occupations
  • Demonstrate an understanding of cardiovascular diseases and stroke and how they relate to OT treatment, including signs, manageable factors, and prevention
  • Discuss cancer and cancer prevention and how it relates to OT treatment, including signs, manageable factors, and prevention
  • Review Infection Control Guidelines
  • Review HIPAA Guidelines
  • Identify statistics related to the leading causes of death, life expectancy, and yearly health care costs in the United States, including discussing the underlying causes of death attributable to leading risk factors
  • Relate physical activity, psychological activity, and healthy lifestyle habits to health and longevity, which are necessary for occupational performance
  • Discuss the incidence of overweight and obesity trends in the United States and the greater incidences of premature illness and mortality risks present among overweight and sedentary individuals
  • Relate this to the humanistic theory of change and the importance to motivate individuals to change these behaviors
  • Discuss how being overweight and obesity can affect occupational performance
  • Describe cardio-respiratory endurance, its relationship to physical activity/exercise and health
  • Define and differentiate between muscle strength and fitness (wellness and cardiovascular components)
  • Explain the importance of muscular flexibility to adequate fitness and flexibility test results
  • Define stress, eustress, and distress and explain the role of stress in maintaining health and optimal occupational performance
  • Discuss sleep and its relationship to wellness
  • Understand the importance of the mind/body connection in the manifestation of emotions and disease
