Description

Objective:

The course objective is to serve as the first clinical rotation in the AAS in Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography echocardiography elective. Students are introduced to a clinical laboratory setting in a hospital or cardiovascular imaging facility. During this experience, students become familiar with the following aspects of the operation of an echocardiography laboratory: recording medical information, professionalism, medical ethics, echocardiographic instrumentation, patient preparation, recording patient information, and performing echocardiographic examinations under direct supervision. Students will demonstrate progressive competencies following basic and advanced protocols. Outside preparation includes completion of clinical case study log booklet, clinical competency forms, and weekly summaries.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Evaluate echocardiographic findings
  • Perform advanced and basic diagnostic protocols in a hospital laboratory or a clinical laboratory
  • Evaluate echocardiographic case studies, prepare patients for examinations, apply knowledge of physics and instrumentation to perform studies on the ultrasound systems available
  • Interpret disease states in a preliminary diagnosis to a cardiologist
  • Develop competency in cardiac ultrasound scanning techniques, cardiac ultrasound equipment, and implementing the classroom/laboratory knowledge in a clinical setting
  • Develop competency and knowledge in the practice of adult and/or pediatric cardiac ultrasound techniques
