Description

Objective:

The course objective is to teach students M-mode, PW, CW, Color Flow Doppler, and required calculations. Students will be required to develop proficiency in performance of a diagnostic echocardiogram in the campus laboratory. Diagnostic protocols will be performed and practiced. Outside preparation includes completion of case studies and attendance at regularly scheduled extra help scan labs.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Perform and assess all 2-d parasternal and apical views of the heart
  • Quantify and measure m-mode tracings of the following: left ventricle, aortic valve, mitral valve, tricuspid valve, pulmonic valve, and color m-mode
  • Measure and evaluate doppler tracings with color flow for the following: left ventricular outflow tract, aortic valve, mitral valve, right ventricular outflow tract, pulmonic valve, and tricuspid valve
  • Calculate and demonstrate scoring wall motion and quantifying ejection fraction
  • Evaluate, perform, and interpret the LV stroke volume, valve area by the continuity equation and pressure half time, velocity time integral pressure gradients, isovolumic relaxation time, map regurgitant jet, proximal isovelocity surface area, QP/QS, RVSP, MPAP, PAEDP, and tissue doppler imaging
  • Illustrate and quantify all normal m-mode views with labeling and measurements
  • Perform and assess all normal PW, CW, and color doppler tracings of all cardiac valves and outflow tracts with measurements for hemodynamic analysis
  • Perform and report upon two complete diagnostic echocardiogram protocols
  • Calculate participation percentage based and graded upon the number of hours the student is actively participating during CVS207L clinical scan lab

General Topics:

  • Introduction to Basic M-Mode LV
  • MV
  • AOV, and PV, including labeling and measurement
  • Mapse and Tapse with measurements
  • Spectral Doppler waveform, including all valves and outflow tracts with measurements
  • VTI, VMAX, and pressure half time
  • Doppler calculations for valve area by continuity
  • Complete echo protocol
