Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide an off-campus, supervised experience applying occupational therapy theory, skills, and concepts. Students will use the occupational therapy process while developing and practicing the skills of an entry-level OTA. Students are assigned to a setting working with individuals with developmental, physical, and cognitive challenges.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Outline a clear and logical rationale for the intervention process
  • Modify tasks approach, occupations, and the environment to maximize client performance in collaboration with client, caregiver, family, and significant others, and communicate those needs to the occupational therapist
  • Record client's response to services in a manner that demonstrates the efficacy of interventions, and collect and report on data to evaluate client progress under the supervision of an occupational therapist
  • Demonstrate through practice or discussion, the awareness of supervisory roles and responsibilities as well as the ability to actively collaborate with the occupational therapist
  • Produce the volume of work required in the expected time frame
  • Perform and collaborate with client and occupational therapist to determine appropriate teaching and learning methods
  • Apply all course material to fieldwork experiences to strengthen the ties between didactic and fieldwork education
  • Employ safety regulations, anticipate potentially hazardous situations, and take steps to prevent accidents
  • Assess client factors and contexts that support or hinder occupational performance
  • Choose occupations that motivate and challenge clients
  • Produce clear and accurate documentation that effectively justifies rationale for service that is appropriate for the service delivery model and reimbursement according to the site requirements
  • Demonstrate responsibility for attaining professional competence by seeking out learning opportunities and interactions with supervisor(s) and others, conducting evidence-based research, and educating clients and colleagues about findings
  • Demonstrate respect for diversity factors of others, including but not limited to socio-cultural, socioeconomic, spiritual, and lifestyle choices
  • Integrate clients' priorities and address psychosocial factors in treatment and goal setting to enable participation in occupations

General Topics:

  • To develop competent, entry-level, generalist occupational therapy assistants. Level II fieldwork must be integral to the program's curriculum design and must include an in-depth experience in delivering occupational therapy services to clients, focusing on the application of purposeful and meaningful occupation. It is recommended that the student be exposed to a variety of clients across the lifespan to a variety of settings
