Description

Objective:

The course objective is to examine the role of occupational therapy in health care, in community-based systems, and in 125 educational systems.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define occupational roles and identify how to balance occupational roles for optimal health
  • Define the components of the Occupational Therapy Framework: Domain and Process
  • Define the roles of a registered occupational therapist and an occupational therapy assistant, including national and state requirements
  • Describe courses of study and level of fieldwork and identify traits necessary to be a safe and effective therapist throughout various scopes of practice
  • Identify the role of occupational therapy in psychosocial practice, physical disability practice, and pediatric/educational systems practice, and introduce models of occupational performance to carry-out interventions in these practices
  • Describe diseases and disorders occupational therapists frequently treat, and introduce models and theories to guide interventions for these diseases and disorders
  • Define/recognize OT Models (Occupational Performance, Model of Human Occupation, and Occupation Adaptation) and carry-out, explore and develop skills, based on the model, by participating in tasks
  • Practice creating goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely (SMART goals)
  • Define Occupational Therapy and describe the importance of occupation and the multiple roles of occupational therapists
  • Describe the history and philosophical principles of occupational therapy
  • Describe and demonstrate activity analysis through various tasks/activities
  • Identify and define members and roles of the healthcare team that works closely with occupational therapy practitioners, and understand the different roles of each team member
  • Recognize the occupational therapy process
  • Referral, evaluation, treatment planning, treatment process, and discharge process, and apply the framework to this process
  • Describe the different service deliveries within the field of occupational therapy, and analyze the documentation to support occupational therapy services for the purpose of reimbursement
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the application of evidence-based practice based on the ability to comprehend a scholarly report
  • Explain how to adapt and grade tasks/occupations and environments to meet client occupational and safety needs
  • Review and complete learning style inventories and reflect personal learning styles to occupational therapy practice/process
  • Demonstrate professional behaviors in classroom and laboratory settings
