Description

Objective:

English Composition I is a freshman-level course that introduces the principles of writing. Students will produce organized essays using correct organization and structure, including Summary-Response and Persuasive essays. Students will demonstrate proper use of parts of speech, sentence structure, thesis statements, and paragraph structure. They will also show competency in revising an essay already written. The course is built around the theme “How Can We Connect Despite Our Differences?”

Learning Outcomes:

  • Compose an extended persuasive essay.
  • Research sources and properly cite sources using MLA standards.
  • Demonstrate understanding and/or produce various phases of writing including prewriting, outlining, drafting, revision and editing, proofreading, final copy, brainstorming, and free writing.
  • Critique and revise an essay already written by completing a peer review.
  • Use correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure rules, as well as recognize common mistakes made within various aspects of basic composition courses.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the various forms of writing and the relationship between writer and audience.
  • Compose a summary/response essay based on a reading.
