Description

Objective:

Students will continue their studies from English Composition I to produce organized essays using correct organization and structure, while building advanced skills in research methods (accessing print and electronic resources from the internet, library, and other avenues), critical analysis, synthesis of information, and documentation skills using MLA (properly using in-text citation, quotes, paraphrasing, summarizing, and a works cited page). Students will evaluate the validity of reasoning and logic in arguments; comprehend and apply the process of building inquiry-based arguments and apply critical thinking skills and writing strategies to communicate effectively within appropriate rhetorical settings. They will also use all of this knowledge to critique their own and others’ essays. The course is built around the theme “How can We Connect Despite Our Differences?”

  • Compose a rhetorical analysis paper.
  • Compose a researched argument paper.
  • Apply advanced writing skills and appropriate use of the writing process in writing effective literary arguments and applying rhetorical writing strategies.
  • Evaluate the validity of reasoning and logic in arguments and identify an argument’s appeals and types of arguments.
  • Identify and apply the process of building inquiry-based arguments.
  • Apply critical thinking skills and writing strategies to communicate effectively within appropriate rhetorical settings.
  • Demonstrate proficient understanding of MLA formatting guidelines by correctly citing and formatting papers according to MLA guidelines (in-text citation and works cited page) and recognizing the importance of accurate and ethical documentation.
  • Critique and revise an essay already written by completing a peer review.
  • Use correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure rules, as well as recognize common mistakes made within various aspects of College-level composition courses.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the various forms of writing and the relationship between writer and audience.
