Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide information which covers the period of United States history from early European colonization to the end of Reconstruction, with the majority of focus on the period of 1790 through 1877. In the part covering the seventieth and eighteenth centuries, emphasis is placed on British colonies. The following topics are included in this course: political institutions, political developments, behavior and public policy, social developments, economic developments, cultural and intellectual developments, and diplomacy and international relations.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Analyze major events which led to the development of the United States including social and political movements
  • Identify the major themes of United States history- social, political, economic, and cultural and how those events affected the development of American society
  • Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to identify significant areas of historical significance throughout the 1770s and 1800s or Recall significant developments in American history over a defined span of time, roughly colonial era to the 1870s
  • Examine thematic events throughout the historical periods studied, including their impact on modern events
  • And consider how various social, political, cultural, and economic events encouraged political participation and civic engagement in the Unites States

  • Colonization and its effect on the New World, colonial America, the American Revolution, formation of the New National Government, westward expansion, early reformation and social movements, early presidential administrations, Civil War era America, and early Reconstruction
