Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide students with an introductory level course in the political and economic history of the United States of America from the nation's beginning until the beginning of the 20th century.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Become familiar with the societies that existed in the Americas prior to European exploration and colonization
  • Identify the challenges that the Americans overcame to gain independence from Great Britain, establishing a new government, and creating the Constitution
  • Document the issues that ultimately led to the Civil War
  • Recognize the goals, challenges and failures of Reconstruction
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the political, economical, and technological changes of 15th century Europe that led to the exploration of the Americas
  • Recognize the basic political, economic, and religious movements that shaped and influenced colonial life
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the economic and cultural factors that created dependency on slavery in the South
  • Identify the transformations that occurred in both the North and the South as a consequence of the Civil War
