Objective:

To survey the various microscopic agents of particular importance to humans with emphasis on those involved in infectious disease.

  • Summarize the general structure, life cycle, function, and metabolism of microbes and viruses
  • Summarize the human body's defenses against microorganisms
  • Summarize the control of microorganisms
  • Summarize the harmful effects and transmission of microorganisms

  • The basic chemistry for life, the prokaryotic structure, Eukaryotic cells, virology, growth and nutrition of microbes, metabolism, genetics, control of infectious agents, antibiotic therapy, interactions of host and pathogens, antimicrobial defenses, pathogenic bacteria and fungi, parasites, and viruses
