Description

Objective:

The AS Drama examination consists of two Papers. Paper 1 is a written exam where candidates answer two questions over play extracts from a list of set texts that rotate from year to year. Paper 2 is compulsory group experience on devising and performing based on a stimulus (10-15 minutes devised piece, 3-minute self-evaluation) as well as preparing and performing an extract from a published play of their own choice (a 10-25 minute scripted performance).

At the A Level, there are two additional components. Paper 3 requires candidates to work in a group to devise and perform a play (15-20 minutes) inspired by a theater practitioner, tradition, or styles, along with an 800-word analysis and evaluation. There is also a 6-8 minute individual performance. Paper 4 requires the candidate to submit a 2500-3000 word research essay exploring performance texts, a theater genre, a theater practitioner’s work, or a performance style.

Marks from Papers 1 & 2 are carried forward and combined with Papers 3 & 4 to comprise the complete A Level.

Skills Measured:

The assessment objectives require students to demonstrate 1) their knowledge and understanding of drama text and its performance context, and of theatre-making traditions and theatre practice; 2) skill and creativity in devising original pieces of theatre for group performance; 3) acting skills in performing a range of text-based materials; and 4) the ability to analyse and reflect on their own performance practice and devising processes; candidates evaluate their own work and that of playwrights, performers, or theatre-makers.
