For illustrative purposes, the first option (pure mathematics and mechanics) is described fully here. The exam consists of two parts, consisting of structured questions. The pure mathematics exam includes 10-12 questions, worth 75 score points, and accounting for 60 percent of the grade. The mechanics exam includes 6-8 structured questions, worth 50 score points, and comprising 40 percent of the grade. The first exam is 1 hour and 50 minutes, and the second is 1 hour and 15 minutes. Both exams measure candidates' knowledge and understanding and application and communication of mathematical facts, concepts, theories, procedures, and problem solving. Skills Measured: For pure mathematics (Paper 1), skills/outcomes include quadratics; functions; coordinate geometry; circular measure; trigonometry; series; differentiation; and integration. For pure mathematics 2 (Paper 2), skills/outcomes include algebra; logarithmic and exponential functions; trigonometry; differentiation; integration; and numerical solution of equations. For mechanics (Paper 4), skills/outcomes include forces and equilibrium; kinematics of motion in a straight line; momentum; Newton's laws of motion; and energy, work and power. For probability & statistics 1 (Paper 5), skills/outcomes include representation of data; permutations and combinations; probability; discrete random variables; and the normal distribution.Note: Students select content options as part of the exam administration, and thus Papers are combined to cover different content, with the overall exam resulting in a specific emphasis. This emphasis is noted in parentheses on the grade transcript as Pure; Pure and Mechanics; Pure and Probability and Statistics; or Pure, Mechanics, and Probability and Statistics. This notation can be used by the institution to determine the best match for credit awards.
