Description

Objective:

The AS Classical Studies examination consists of two Papers. For Paper 1 (Greek Civilization), students are allowed 1 hour and 30 minutes to answer two questions: one compulsory source-based question and one essay question on their chosen topic (choosing between Alexander the Great, Aristophanes, or Themes in Greek Vase Painting). For Paper 2 (Roman Civilization), students are allowed 1 hour and 30 minutes to answer two questions: one compulsory source-based question and one essay question on their chosen topic (choosing between Augustus, Virgil’s Aeneid, or Architecture of the Roman City).

For the A Level Classical Studies, there are two additional Papers. Paper 3 covers Classical History, allowing 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete one compulsory source-based question and one essay question on a chosen topic (Athens & Sparta or Emperors & Subjects). Paper 4 covers Greek Literature, allowing 1 hour and 30 minutes to answer one compulsory source-based question and one essay question on a chosen topic (Greek Tragedy or Homeric Epic).

Marks from Papers 1 & 2 are carried forward and combined with Papers 3 & 4 to comprise the complete A Level.

Skills Measured:

There are two primary assessment objectives. Students must 1) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of literary, cultural, material, or historical sources in their appropriate contexts and 2) analyze, evaluate, and respond to literary, cultural, material, or historical sources to produce coherent and reasoned arguments. They do this at the AS Level by surveying the culture, literature, history, and politics of the Classical period, as well as studying significant individuals. At the A Level, students explore the history of the Greek or Roman world in more detail through deeper study of its military, political, social and cultural history. They also explore Greek culture, society, and thought through the medium of tragedy or epic, developing students’ literary analysis and appreciation skills.
