Description

Objective:

The AS Geography examination consists of two components. Paper 1 covers core physical geography over 1 hour and 30 minutes, via structured questions (non-multiple choice) requiring data response. Paper 2 covers core human geography over 1 hour and 30 minutes, via structured questions requiring data response.
The A Level Geography examination requires two additional components. Paper 3 allows 1 hour and 30 minutes to respond to structured and essay questions on advanced physical geography topics. Paper 4 allows 1 hour and 30 minutes for responses to structured and essay questions on advanced human geography. Marks from Papers 1 & 2 at the AS Level are carried over and combined with Papers 3 & 4 to comprise the complete A Level.

Skills Measured:

There are four assessment objectives. 1) Students are evaluated on the ability to give definitions and explanations of relevant geographical terms and concepts; show working knowledge of relevant principles, theories and models; recall accurately the location and character of places and environments; and show knowledge of physical and human processes and factors. 2) Students must demonstrate they understand the complex and interactive nature of physical and human environments; understand how processes bring changes in systems, distributions and environments; recognize the significance of the similarities and differences between places, environments and people; recognize the significance of spatial scale and time scale; and apply geographical knowledge and understanding to unfamiliar contexts.
3) Students must interpret a variety of types of geographical data and sources and recognize their limitations; use geographical data to identify trends and patterns; use diagrams and sketch maps to illustrate geographical features; demonstrate skills of analysis and synthesis of geographical information; and communicate geographical evidence, ideas and arguments.
4) Students must also assess the effects of geographical processes and change on physical and human environments; evaluate the relative success or failure of initiatives; assess how the viewpoints of different groups of people, potential conflicts of interest and other factors interact in the management of physical and human environments; and critically evaluate geographical principles, theories and models.
