For examinees completing the AS level exam, three semester hours in Digital Media and Design is recommended.
Description

Objective:

The AS Digital Media & Design examination consists of two components. With each, students are working from a client brief or scenario and should reflect the constraints of the audience or client requirements as they develop their ideas in their chosen area of study. Component 1 is a portfolio representing a particular theme from a choice of topics, with a supporting study of said theme showing research, exploration of media, materials, technology, development and editing of the ideas and a personal response, and then a proposal for the client/scenario involving either digital photography, moving image, or mobile and multimedia applications. Component 2 requires students to respond to a separate brief or scenario, again requiring supporting studies, but ultimately producing the final outcome during a supervised test of 10 hours total duration. Students are given the brief or scenario during an early preparation period and use that time for the supporting studies element.
The A Level Digital Media & Design examination has one additional component centering on personal investigation. Component 3 has two elements: a final practical outcome and a written analysis of 1000-1500 words. The aim of the Personal Investigation is for candidates to engage in a self-directed period of sustained and focused study. This study should bring together the skills they have developed so far and demonstrate that they are able to work independently to resolve a given idea. It is a substantial piece of independent research and students must sign a declaration that they are the author of their work when submitting this component, which is worth 50% of the final A Level grade.

Marks from Components 1 & 2 are carried forward and combination with Component 3 to comprise the complete A Level.

Skills Measured:

Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the following: 1) working to a brief, 2) ethical considerations of digital media and design, 3) critical and contextual understanding, 4) design theories, 5) drawing for design, 6) formal elements of design, and 7) evaluation and testing of design. There are four assessment objectives: 1) Research and record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress; generate and research ideas from a variety of appropriate sources, and record and analyze information relevant to ideas; 2) Explore and select appropriate media, materials and technology, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops; explore a range of media, materials or technology appropriate to ideas; review and refine digital solutions to the brief; 3) Develop ideas or concepts through investigations informed by feedback, testing and constraints, demonstrating critical understanding; make informed judgements through testing, development and understanding relevant constraints; use visual and other forms to express ideas or concepts relevant to the brief; and 4) Produce a personal digital response that realizes intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between digital and design elements; show personal vision and commitment through a creative digital response; and present an informed response through personal evaluation, reflection and critical thinking.
