Description

Objective:

Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to learn how to apply claim handling principles and investigation techniques.

Learning Outcomes:

  • The student will learn about the claims function, its success, and the role each department of an insurer plays in it.
  • Students will learn how to assess claims and conduct claims investigations, including interviewing claimants and witnesses and establishing a reserve.
  • Students will learn to determine the cause of loss and whether liability exists, how to determine the loss amounts, and what is involved with concluding a claim.
  • Students will gain familiarity with successful claims negotiating, the claims litigation process, and civil trials.
  • Students will become familiar with the expanding universe of claims data, how it is mined, how to collaborate with data experts, and how to use classification tree analysis for claims.
  • Students will learn how to detect, identify, and investigate the different types of claims fraud.
  • Ethical claims handling will be discussed, as well as specific characteristics of good- and bad-faith claims handling, and defenses against claims of the latter.
