Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide the a comprehensive overview of the main themes of European history from the age of the Enlightenment, roughly the 16th century, through modern times. The evolution and development of cultural, intellectual, scientific, economic and political institutions are outlined, and overall trends are traced.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Trace the emergence of the modern European intellectual and political landscape through the Enlightenment, the Scientific Revolution, and the rise of mercantilism in the 17th and 18th centuries
  • Grasp the significance of the French Revolution in the evolution of western thought and political systems
  • Outline the great transformations of the 19th century industrialization and urbanization, the rise of nationalism, and the spread of imperialism and international competition
  • Understand the tragedy of the first World War and the impact of that conflict on the appearance of totalitarian states and the economic reverses of the post-war period
  • Outline the emergence of a new Europe in the complexities of the post-Cold War era
