Organization

The Health Insurance Association of America (HIAA), headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a voluntary trade association that represents and promotes the interests of its members with respect to medical, disability, and long-term care insurance as well as associated managed care programs. Its members serve the public interest by protecting individuals against the financial burdens of sickness or accidental injury and by encouraging the effective management of health care expenditures. To fulfill its mission, in part, HIAA conducts education programs that enhance understanding of health insurance and managed care programs within the industry and the public.The association has sponsored a formal educational program since 1958. This program currently offers two designations--the Health Insurance Associate and the Managed Healthcare Professional. The Health Insurance Associate curriculum consists of six courses: Fundamentals A and B, Medical Expense, Supplemental, and two electives. Electives in Fraud, Disability Income, and Long-Term Care are offered. The Managed Healthcare Professional curriculum consists of six courses: Fundamentals A and B, Managed Care A, B, and C, and Medical Expense. These courses give the student comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the technical and socioeconomic aspects of both group and individual health insurance products.A comprehensive examination assesses achievement for each course. Students' principal method of preparation for final examinations is through independent study, with on-the-job experience and, in some instances, classroom instruction supplementing this study. HIAA provides self-study materials that candidates can use to prepare for examinations. Course content and examinations are constantly reviewed and updated by knowledgeable, active professionals in the various specialties of the health insurance business.
