The South Jersey Career Center, Inc. is a private vocational school licensed by the New Jersey State Department of Education. Originally established as a developmental learning center for seasonal migrant workers predominantly from Central and Latin America, the Center evolved into a corporate training center for local businesses, industries, and health-care institutions as well. It is also a retraining center for dislocated workers, recently unemployed workers, and underemployed members of the local surrounding communities. While the Center endeavors to provide all students with 21st century computer technology and expertise, an important goal leading to higher education at the postsecondary level, its initial focus is on remediation of basic skills in order to prepare students to succeed at the problem-solving and critical-thinking stages of learning, to proceed to higher order learning and ultimately to two-year and four-year courses of study. It has, therefore, become a transition and referral center where students can gain the necessary basic skills and confidence to compete in postsecondary institutions of higher learning.Courses range from basic remedial education in English as a Second Language (ESL) and General Educational Development (GED) to highly technical in computer applications, allied health, graphic design, and basic electronics. All classes are taught in a modern, one-story facility that includes fully equipped classrooms. The faculty has been recruited from the local community of businesses, academia, and health-care institutions. Many have advanced degrees and are recognized for their contributions and expertise in their respective fields, thereby ensuring high quality in course content and instructional techniques.
