NWCET is an independent organization that was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to define standards for the IT industry. NWCET called upon CEO's, managers, human resource personnel and IT professionals across the country in order to gather the data that contributed toward defining the skills standards for the IT industry. In addition, NWCET received input from educators, business and other organizations representing the IT and non-IT firms that are dependent on IT professionals, in developing NWCET's nationally recognized standards. The ATS program is one solution to the IT industry's plea for skilled IT workers for the increasing volume of entry-level IT jobs opening across the globe. The certification program consists of the Core Skills exam and 2 exams in 8 technical areas including: Network Design and Administration, Enterprise Systems Analysis and Integration, Database Development and Administration, Digital Media, Programming/Software Engineering, Technical Support, Technical Writing, and Web Development and Administration. The certification is designed to assess both the core skills and technical skills a candidate needs to successfully enter into one of the eight career areas in the IT market. There is no required sequence in which the exams must be taken. Each of the tests consists of 75 multiple-choice questions, delivered primarily via computer-based testing centers, with a testing time of 90 minutes for each test. Arrangements can be made by contacting the ATS Program at the Chauncey Group International for paper-and-pencil versions of the test.
