Description

Objective:

This course is offered through Coursera, which is an ACE Authorized Instructional Platform.

The course objective is for learners to understand the evolution and cultural significance of cosmetics; gain knowledge of safety standards for consumer wellness in cosmetics; grasp fundamental skin biology and how it relates to skincare; and learn about cosmetic ingredients and their role in product formulation.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the structure and function of skin biology and analyze how cosmetic ingredients interact with skin to influence health and performance
  • Identify and evaluate common cosmetic raw materials—including surfactants, emulsifiers, preservatives, and additives—based on their chemical composition and functional roles in formulations
  • Apply foundational formulation principles and quantitative methods to design stable and effective cosmetic products using appropriate laboratory practices and documentation standards
  • Interpret technical documentation such as Certificates of Analysis (CoA) and assess ingredient quality, safety, and suitability for formulation use
  • Develop and justify cosmetic product concepts by integrating consumer insights, feasibility analysis, ingredient selection, and packaging considerations within industry constraints
  • Evaluate cosmetic product performance, safety, and quality using established testing methods, regulatory frameworks, and quality assurance principles
  • Analyze and troubleshoot formulation challenges by integrating experimental data, comparing formulation systems, and proposing evidence-based improvements aligned with sustainability and ethical standards
  • Explain the historical evolution of cosmetics and the modern cosmetic industry, including key scientific, regulatory, and ethical considerations
