Description

Objective:

The course objective is to equip the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the job duties of a line worker employee in a safe and proficient manner.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Build transformer banks and determine proper voltage
  • Install and remove oil circuit reclosers
  • Demonstrate safe working procedures
  • Work on energized multiple phase conductors
  • Operate bucket trucks and digger derrick trucks
  • Replace a fused sectionalizer switch
  • Install a horizontal mount 25KV load bread gang switch
  • Operate capacitors

General Topics:

  • Basic line and equipment skills: section '0', distributions bulletins, overhead materials, knots and splices, wire identification, compression connections, introduction to overhead transformers, digger derrick operations, load charts, on the road driving, and open/closed center hydraulic systems
  • Basic underground skills: underground safety, job briefings, reading construction prints and one-line diagrams, terminations, transfer of control, writing single phase switching orders, executing single phase switching orders, and distribution bulletins
  • Overhead module I: safety, print reading, pole configurations, climbing, transformer installations, service connections, personal protective grounding, trouble shooting, system coordination, and distribution bulletins
  • Overhead module II: safety procedures for live line work, four rules of cover, job briefings, perform energized task, and climbing
  • Overhead module III: replacing poles in energized conductors, transferring conductors, installing and removing gang switches, reclosers, fused sectionalizer switches, capacitors on and off line, and climbing
  • Advanced underground skills: safety, three phase transformer and riser installations, single phase switching, three phase switching, operation on manual and automatic switching cubicles, padmounted open delta bank, underground service restoration devices, cable and fault locating, earth gradient devices, radar scopes, and impulse generators
