Like the rest of the country, college campuses are abuzz with talk and activity centered on the 2018 midterm elections.
As part of these efforts, ACE supports the Your Vote, Your Voice initiative, a national campus voter registration project backed by the Washington Higher Education Secretariat, a group of Washington, DC-based higher education associations. ACE encourages all higher education institutions to engage in and support voter registration programs and voter participation initiatives, which also is encouraged by federal law.
On a related note, ACE has updated its issue brief on "Political Campaign-Related Activities of and at Colleges and Universities."
This factual guide is designed to educate campus administrators, faculty, and staff about community members' involvement in elections, such as hosting an event or volunteering for a campaign, and gives concrete examples of what is and is not likely to be viewed as acceptable.
The issue brief is based on judicial and IRS rulings and the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 as well as Federal Election Commission regulations. It is intended as general guidance only. Specific cases should be referred to campus legal counsel.
