Statement by ACE President Ted Mitchell About Bipartisan Congressional Efforts to Protect Dreamers
January 18, 2018

“We strongly support the bipartisan efforts of a number of members of Congress, including Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Dick Durbin (D-IL), to forge a long-term legislative solution to permanently protect hundreds of thousands of Dreamers. We are confident that a clear majority of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in the House and Senate are ready to act swiftly to ensure that these outstanding young people no longer are forced to live in fear and uncertainty.

Dreamers were brought to the United States as children and have overcome many obstacles to make incredible contributions to our country. They are our friends and neighbors, our colleagues and students. It is unacceptable for them to be held hostage to a political face-off and left in limbo as they try to make decisions beyond the next few weeks about their education, jobs, or serving in the military.

We urge the administration and congressional leaders to embrace bipartisan legislation and bring it quickly to the floor for a successful vote. It is of paramount importance to keep the door open in this country to an entire generation of young people who seek only to contribute their best to the United States, the only country they have ever called home.”
