November 09, 2020

Two workshops for campus leaders will take place next week via ACE Engage® on how to plan for the long term while meeting the demands of the current COVID-19 crisis and how best to communicate about budget cuts if they are required.

On Nov. 16, from 3-5 p.m. ET, Nicholas Santilli, senior director for learning strategy at the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) and former interim provost at John Carroll University, will lead the workshop “Campus Planning for Long-Term Success.” Higher education institutions have adapted remarkably to life during the current pandemic, but what is next? Santilli will apply cross-departmental integrated planning to engage participants in interactive exercises that they can take back and use on their campuses right away. This event is co-sponsored by SCUP and ACE, and ticket prices are discounted for members of either organization.

On Nov. 18, from 2-4 p.m. ET, attend “Framing Budget Cuts to Build Stakeholder Support,” led by Paul D’Anieri, professor of public policy and political science and former provost at the University of California, Riverside. Tickets are discounted for ACE members. D’Anieri will address challenges such as: How do we frame the problem, show the range of options considered, and build support for—or at least acceptance of—an unpleasant solution? What political and ethical considerations should guide the process? Attendees will learn concrete techniques and get hands-on practice with the difficult job of leading a budget-cutting process.
