Statement by ACE President Ted Mitchell on Supreme Court Decision to Take Up DACA
June 28, 2019

“The decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the issue of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy only underscores the urgent need for Congress to act now to pass a long-term, bipartisan solution to protect Dreamers.

Because it could easily be a year before we have a final decision by the Court, this is not an excuse for inaction by lawmakers. These high-achieving young people will continue to live in the legal limbo that they have faced since the Trump administration’s rescission of DACA in September 2017.

In an era of partisan acrimony and polarization, there is widespread and bipartisan support for protecting Dreamers both on Capitol Hill and on Main Street. But for far too long, Dreamers have been held political hostage despite the overwhelming national sentiment for safeguarding these bright and talented individuals. While continuing to be temporarily protected by court rulings, they have been unable to make long-term decisions about their education, jobs, or serving in the military.

We urge Congress to move swiftly to lift the cloud of fear and uncertainty that Dreamers have been living under by passing a permanent legislative fix that will enable these exceptional individuals to keep contributing their best to America, the only country they have ever called home. The House has done so with the passage of the American Dream and Promise Act earlier this month. As we did this week in a letter to Senate leaders, we again call on the Senate to swiftly follow suit and pass the House bill or take up and pass similar legislation protecting Dreamers.”
