New Briefs Provide Guidance for Campus Leaders, Faculty in Assisting Students With Disabilities
March 13, 2019

ACE and two other organizations have released new briefs providing background for the higher education community on how to help students with disabilities develop the skills to succeed in postsecondary education.

The two pieces—one for higher education leaders, and a second one for faculty—are co-authored by the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) and the American Association of University Administrators

The brief for postsecondary leaders notes that as more individuals with visible and invisible disabilities enroll in college, presidents, provosts and other senior campus leaders “have the opportunity to help advance a remarkable educational and civil rights movement, preparing and including individuals with disabilities for successful futures.”

The second brief emphasizes that “faculty at higher education institutions have an unprecedented opportunity to shape a more inclusive society while unlocking untapped individual talent in every field and discipline.”

Both documents were shared Sunday during a session at ACE2019, ACE’s 101st Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, “Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: How to Create Programs for Success and Empowerment.” See ACE’s Higher Education Today blog for a summary of that session.

The session and these background briefs are part of ACE’s effort to assist campuses looking to improve how they serve students with disabilities. For more information, click here.
