This week, ACE is celebrating several awards announced throughout the year by showcasing the winners’ accomplishments through video interviews, social media highlights, and more as part of ACE Awards Week.

Guilford College Interim President Carol Moore Receives ACE/APL nextED Donna Shavlik Award

The ACE/APL nextED Donna Shavlik Award honors an individual whose leadership, both at colleges and universities and in national positions, has demonstrated a sustained and continuing commitment to the advancement of women.

Among other accomplishments, Moore led the private liberal arts women's college Columbia College in South Carolina to sound financial and academic standing and oversaw a significant increase in student recruitment and enrollment during her tenure as president. The press release for this award was published Feb. 19, 2020, in advance of ACE’s annual meeting at which these awards are usually celebrated. COVID-19 diverted these plans, resulting in this virtual celebration of ACE Awards Week.

Among his many accomplishments, Bumphus formed the 21st Century Commission on the Future of Community Colleges, resulting in a report, “Reclaiming the American Dream,” that urged leaders to reimagine community colleges as centers of collaboration focused on the support of better learning outcomes. Amarillo College and Dominican University of California Receive Institutional Transformation Award

The ACE/Fidelity Investments Award for Institutional Transformation recognizes colleges or universities that, in a period of great change in higher education, responded to challenges in innovative and creative ways that allow the institution to thrive. ACE invited nominations and applications for the award from any U.S. college or university eligible for ACE membership, divided into two categories: the first for institutions with student populations of 5,001 and more (Amarillo), and the second for institutions with student populations of up to 5,000 (Dominican).

Amarillo’s transformation efforts include an ambitious five-year strategic plan called No Excuses 2020 to raise completion rates. Dominican garnered institutional change through a partnership with a nearby city to promote civic engagement with internships and scholarships. The San Francisco Bay area university achieved so much success that the program is now being scaled across California. See the press release published last week for more details.

For Awards Week, ACE President Ted Mitchell conducted video interviews with Amarillo College President Russell Lowery-Hart and Dominican President Mary B. Marcy.
