Statement of ACE President Molly Corbett Broad on the Death of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh

February 27, 2015

Father Hesburgh

“We mourn the passing but celebrate the remarkable life and profound legacy of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh. Father Hesburgh’s vision and leadership transformed the University of Notre Dame, left an indelible mark on all of American higher education and extended far into the fabric of American life, most notably his powerful advocacy on behalf of civil rights. He is an iconic national figure whose influence will remain with us for generations to come.

Among the numerous ways his impact continues to be felt is through the TIAA-CREF Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence in Higher Education, which was established in 1993 and is presented at the ACE Annual Meeting to a college or university president who embodies the spirit of Father Hesburgh and his contributions to higher education and society.”
