RESPONDING TO THE FAFSA CRISIS

The troubled rollout of revisions to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has produced a twofold crisis for higher education. First, far fewer high school seniors than usual have applied for financial aid, which threatens to shrink the college pipeline. Second, there have been major delays in the transmission of FAFSA data from the federal government to colleges and universities. Those delays have prevented many institutions from delivering financial aid offers to admitted students in a timely manner. To ensure that families have enough time to make good choices, the American Council on Education (ACE) is encouraging colleges and universities to extend the traditional May 1 deadline for admitted students to commit to enroll.

A list of colleges and universities that have extended deadlines, as well as the latest data from the National College Attainment Network on the decline in FAFSA completions by high school seniors in the class of 2024, can be found below.

This list of institutions that have extended their deadlines is not exhaustive. Also, it should be noted that many colleges and universities have rolling or open admissions. If your institution has taken steps to extend its usual May 1 enrollment commitment deadline, please contact Nick Anderson, vice president for higher education partnerships and improvement at ACE, at nanderson@acenet.edu.

Far Fewer Students Are Completing the FAFSA
The National College Attainment Network is tracking how many high school seniors have completed the FAFSA form so far this year, compared with the same time last year. This data will be updated regularly. See the NCAN data for more information.
