ACE Releases Working Paper to Guide Campuses on Conflict of
Interest
Washington, DC (Jan. 25,
2008)—The American Council on Education (ACE) today released a
working paper to guide trustees, presidents, administrators and faculty
in strengthening institutional policies and practices in the area of
conflict of interest. The paper, which is available on ACE's
web site, was drafted by a working group which included campus
leaders as well as representatives of several higher education
associations.
The paper,
which is a working document, proposes basic principles and identifies
questions and criteria to guide review of policies and situations that
may raise ethical concerns. The paper also includes a list of resources
on this topic to which institutions may refer.
“Current
interest in this issue, and the likelihood that such interest will
continue for the foreseeable future, suggests that all higher education
institutions may benefit from review of institutional policies and
practices in this area,” said Ada Meloy, ACE general counsel and
chair of the working group.
In addition to
outlining basic principles for management of conflict of interest, the
paper also identifies several sets of questions and considerations to
help guide institutional review and implementation of conflict of
interest policies in the following categories: relationships with
vendors and prospective vendors, conflict of interest policy,
implementation of conflict of interest policy, and institutional
conflict of interest.
Members of the
working group were:
• Steve Dunham, vice president and general counsel, Johns Hopkins
University
• Sean Fanelli, president, Nassau Community College, board member,
American Association of Community Colleges
• Brit Kirwan, chancellor and CEO, University System of
Maryland
• John Lippincott, president, Council for Advancement and Support
of Education, and board member, ACE
• Patricia McGuire, president, Trinity Washington University
• Ada Meloy, general counsel, ACE (working group chair)
• John Walda, president, National Association of College and
University Business Officers
• Nancy Zimpher, president, University of Cincinnati, chair of the
board, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant
Colleges, and board member, ACE
Alex Dreier of
Hogan & Hartson and Terry Hartle, ACE senior vice president,
provided staff support for the working group.
Founded in 1918, ACE is the major
coordinating body for all the nation's higher education
institutions, representing more than 1,600 college and university
presidents, and more than 200 related associations, nationwide. It seeks
to provide leadership and a unifying voice on key higher education
issues and influence public policy through advocacy, research, and
program initiatives.
