With increased longevity and uncertain economic times, more adults
arrive at the age of 55 or 60 asking, "What do I DO for the
next 20 years?"
Older adults are entering their third age of life—a stage
traditionally defined by retirement and leisure. Today, more adults aged
55–79 change careers, go to college, start new businesses, and
tackle community problems.
Such shifts have significant implications for higher education.
Through a two-year research project, the American Council on Education
will examine and report on the educational needs of this growing
population of older adults.
This project is made possible with the generous assistance of MetLife Foundation.
