2017 Council of Fellows Weekend

June 09, 2017

Theme: Higher Education Leadership in Challenging Times

The 2017 COF Weekend will be full of engaging sessions and special events, including a full day of pre-conference programming on Friday that begins with an engaging campus visit for alumni and current Fellows to Gallaudet University and concludes with an evening discussion on the dynamics and challenges of serving on a search committee and being a candidate in a search process.

Saturday afternoon will feature a half-day active learning session on strategic planning, entitled, "Enterprise Risk Management: What Institutional Leaders Need to Know and Do." Janice Abraham, President & CEO of United Educators, will give the keynote address focusing on why enterprise risk management matters in higher education. After the presentation, Fellows will have the opportunity to work in small groups to address strategic approaches to manage multiple risks on a college campus, before they evolve into a crisis.

On Sunday, a panel will lead a discussion on the mission, vision, opportunities, and challenges in "faith-connected" institutions of higher education. The panelists will shape their insights and experiences of how these institutions are 'similar' or 'different' from other institutions, particularly public higher education institutions.

Sunday continues with a special presidential luncheon plenary session with an opportunity for Fellows to engage a panel of presidents from both public and private colleges/universities. Panelists will discuss the topic, "Presidential Leadership for Post-Election Political Discourse on Campus," and share their experiences on the challenges of elevating post-election political discourse to one of civility and respectful disagreement.

Formally welcoming the incoming Fellows class for the first time is always exciting. The 2017-2018 Fellows will engage current and former Fellows on the promises and challenges of the ACE Fellowship year. All Fellows will have the opportunity to attend COF committee meetings and networking reception and to engage in strategic conversations about shaping the direction of the 2018 and 2019 COF weekends.
