Campus Planning for Long-Term Success

November 16, 2020

Those in the planning world advise leaders to never waste a crisis. Higher education institutions have adapted remarkably to life during the current pandemic, but what next? To ensure that their campuses thrive after this crisis, institutions must consider the near- and long-term future. This workshop, led by Nicholas Santilli, senior director for learning strategy at the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) and former interim provost at John Carroll University, applies cross-departmental integrated planning to help institutions plan through the pandemic. Attendees will engage in interactive exercises to use on their campuses right away.

Framing Budget Cuts to Build Stakeholder Support

November 19, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic left all higher education institutions with revenue shortfalls and cost increases. Budget cuts are necessary, but how can they best be communicated? How do we frame the problem, show the range of options considered, and build support for—or at least acceptance of—an unpleasant solution? What political and ethical considerations should guide the process? In this workshop, led by Paul D’Anieri, professor of public policy and political science and former provost at the University of California, Riverside, attendees will learn concrete techniques and get hands-on practice with the difficult job of leading a budget-cutting process.
