Statement by ACE President Ted Mitchell on Trump Administration's Continued Dismantling of the Department of Education
November 18, 2025

"The Trump administration's continued dismantling of the Department of Education is an enormous waste of taxpayer money, another example of evading congressional authority, and a grave disservice to millions of students and families. We urge the administration to change course and concentrate on ensuring the Department of Education is doing the best possible job for students and families in areas such as ensuring that student financial aid programs provide millions of low- and middle-income students access to higher education, overseeing crucial Title I funding that supports elementary and secondary school students from low-income families, and carrying out the vital work of the Office for Civil Rights across all education sectors.

The administration should restore funding and staff to key agency responsibilities to allow it to be most effective in doing the work that benefits millions of ordinary Americans. If the administration insists on staying on this path, then Congress should step in and take action to head off this deeply misguided decision."
