Colleges & Universities: Granting Credit With the National Guide

Millions of students are resuming or starting their college journey with learning and credentials that they’ve earned in the workplace, through certifications, and through their own independent initiative and hard work to complete courses and exams. These motivated learners are looking for colleges ready to support their success by granting them credit for their learning so that they have a chance to persist to graduation and earn degrees that unlock new opportunities for them.

Understanding the ACE National Guide

The ACE National Guide contains course exhibits that include everything you need to know in order to grant credit for equivalent courses in your degree programs. You can find descriptions, grading structure, learning outcomes, topics covered, and types of educational experiences and assessments used for many types of educational experiences that have been reviewed by our expert teams. Syllabi and other supplemental materials may also be available. If you need additional information, we encourage you to reach out to the provider directly to discuss their programs.

Recommendations

ACE recommends postsecondary academic credit equivalencies based on faculty expertise. Academic recommendations include a number of semester hours, level, and subject area, which vary based on the experience reviewed. In our competency reviews, faculty also validate the skills and competencies that students are expected to master in order to pass the course or exam. Experiences evaluated and/or endorsed by ACE's Learning Evaluations (formerly CREDIT®) are re-reviewed every three years to ensure that the recommendations remain aligned with current academic expectations in a given discipline.

Faculty Experts

ACE brings together independent teams of subject-matter experts from the faculties of accredited colleges and universities to evaluate the courses and exams listed in the National Guide. Our faculty evaluators are experienced teachers and researchers from all accrediting regions. These faculty teams examine all aspects of the experience, including breadth and depth of content coverage, methods of assessment, assignment rubrics, and examples of student work. At the conclusion of their review, the faculty teams determine an equivalent amount and level of academic credit that a student transferring that experience into a college or university should earn based on a comparison of current academic expectations and standards of accredited postsecondary education programs.

Military Guide

If you’ve received a Joint Services Transcript, information about the courses and occupations contained there can be found in the Military Guide. The two types of ACE transcripts are administered separately, and students may have multiple types of prior learning that apply to the program of study they wish to pursue at your institution. If you need assistance in interpreting the exhibits or granting credit, please reach out to us at credit@acenet.edu.
