Description

Objective:

The course objective is to present a variety of theoretical viewpoints to provide students with a well-balanced view of a child's developmental process. Current studies and research provide students with an understanding of the principal topics of child psychology as well as recent trends in socially relevant problem areas.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss the history of the discipline of child psychology as well as the theories of child psychology
  • Outline the stages of physical growth from infancy through puberty into adolescence
  • Explain cognitive development from the information processing perspective
  • Discuss different concepts of intelligence and evaluate approaches to assessing intelligence
  • Outline the perspectives on social development and the development of personality
  • Discuss theoretical approaches to moral development
  • Describe the scientific method as it applies to the study of child development and psychology
  • Explain the influences of heredity on infant and child development, including arguments about the relative roles of heredity and environment
  • Explain early learning, perceptual capacities, and the development of motor skills during infancy
  • Discuss cognitive and language development by reference to the developmental theories of Piaget and Vygotsky
  • Explain the emergence of the sense of self in the context of attaining social skills and acquiring an understanding of social norms
  • Explain the development of sex differences and gender roles.
