Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enhance and strengthen the ILR level 2+ student's functional use of the language by stressing active language production and accuracy to cultivate a language analyst capable of excelling at more than passive tasks. The primary objectives of the course include listening and reading comprehension and cultural expertise. Speaking and writing are used to reinforce the proper use of lexical and grammatical forms and serve as an ongoing assessment/feedback tool for the instructor.

Learning Outcomes:

  • read or listen to the passage without stopping and state the main idea of the text
  • demonstrate comprehension of essential elements of information by answering content-related questions;
  • develop titles for passage or sections of the passage
  • gist and summarize text after initial exposure
  • predict unfamiliar vocabulary accurately, using context, word formation, and background knowledge to estimate the meaning of unfamiliar words
  • render translations into idiomatic English
  • identify cultural references, using working aids as required
  • parse sentences grammatically with 90% accuracy
  • identify high-frequency grammatical and syntactic structures in context
  • decode meanings of figurative and idiomatic expressions and nuances using background knowledge
  • distinguish fact from opinion, providing justifications for choices from text
  • identify areas of passage where it is necessary to read "between the lines" to understand the full ramifications of the text in its wider cultural, political or social context
  • predict the author's tone or intent based on various literary devices within the text - word choice, irony, sarcasm, etc
