Description

Objective:

This examination is comprised of a three hour, 200-item examination that covers the scope of practice of an ophthalmic technician. Candidates must also pass a computer-simulated skill evaluation in seven areas. Two hours are allotted to complete the skill evaluation. Students must receive a passing score in all 7 skill areas to successfully pass the skill evaluation.

Skills Measured:

This examination requires candidates to demonstrate the following abilities: perform non-automated lensometry to determine the strength of the distance correction and the bifocal or trifocal add; to perform an automated visual field on a specified automated visual test as determined by JCAHPO; detect a phoria or tropia, and identify the direction of the deviation using appropriate cover tests; perform keratometry; perform retinoscopy; perform refinement; and perform applanation tonometry. The skills and/or knowledge measured include history taking (6 percent); pupillary assessment (5 percent); contact lenses (3 percent); equipment maintenance and repair (4 percent); lensometry (5 percent); keratometry (5 percent); medical ethics, legal, and regulatory issues (3 percent); microbiology (3 percent); pharmacology (5 percent); ocular motility (5 percent); assisting in surgical procedures (6 percent); ophthalmic patient services and education (7 percent); ophthalmic imaging (7 percent); refractometry (7 percent); spectacle skills (3 percent); supplemental skills (9 percent); tonometry (5 percent); visual assessment (6 percent); and visual fields (6 percent).
