Testimony to Senate HELP Committee on Addressing Campus Sexual Assault

April 02, 2019

Anne Meehan, director of Government Relations at ACE, delivered testimony April 2 to the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee at a hearing on “Reauthorizing the Higher Education Act: Addressing Campus Sexual Assault and Ensuring Student Safety and Rights.”

The testimony largely reiterated points made to the Department of Education in ACE’s comments on the proposed rule amending Title IX regulations, such as that colleges and universities are not courts and should not be expected to carry out court-like procedures, and that campuses and their disciplinary processes are diverse so highly prescriptive one-size-fits-all requirements are unlikely to work across all campuses.

Thirty-one other higher education associations signed on to ACE’s testimony:

  • ACPA—College Student Educators International
  • American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education
  • American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers
