The American Council on Education (ACE) is pleased to offer an exclusive training opportunity open only to U.S. higher education institutions that applied but were unable to be supported for the 2018-19 U.S.-Japan COIL Initiative.

Utilizing the expertise of the SUNY COIL Center,  Kansai University Institute for Innovative Global Education (IIGE) and other COIL experts from the United States and Japan, ACE will host an in-person workshop at ACE headquarters in Washington, D.C. on May 23 and 24, on the eve of the NAFSA 2019 Annual Conference & Expo (May 26-31) also taking place in Washington, DC.

The workshop is intended for U.S. institutional teams and their Japanese partners. All institutional team members will receive training and support as they commence joint development of their shared COIL course or module with their partners. Institutional teams should consist of the lead COIL course instructor(s), the administrator responsible for international programs, and the administrator responsible for instructional design.

Workshop participants will also be invited by the SUNY COIL Center to participate in a free, self-paced, online professional and course development academy. The online academy uses a ‘learning-by-doing’ approach, whereby through the very process of completing tasks, participants will be engaging in the sorts of activities that students in COIL courses undertake. Participants will communicate with one another and the facilitators using both asynchronous and synchronous tools that they may then choose to implement in their COIL course. The course is structured around the stages important in COIL course development.

ACE will provide a travel stipend to all enrolled U.S. institutional teams. U.S. and Japanese institutional team members will be responsible for making all travel and hotel arrangements in conjunction with their participation in the workshop. Meals during the workshop will be provided by ACE.

This opportunity is made possible through the generous support of the U.S. Embassy Tokyo and coordinated in partnership with Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT).

Interested U.S.-Japanese institutional teams may individually register for the COIL workshop and online academy by clicking here. The registration deadline is April 30, 2019
