Description

Objective:

The course objective is to introduce the student to premises cabling, the related safety codes, and the TIA/EIA standards and codes. With these fundamentals in place, the course further explains the need for structured cabling systems through exploring the system overview.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define the terms decibel, attenuation, crosstalk, power sum, near end, far end, return loss, delay, delay skew, and impedance as they relate to the performance of UTP cabling systems
  • Express the standard unit of measurement for fiber attenuation and fiber bandwidth
  • List the differences among the various standard categories for UTP cables
  • List the differences among the various standard categories for UTP connecting hardware
  • Locate information within the standard which will assist in answering questions about commercial building telecommunications pathways and spaces
  • Name the five areas of telecommunications infrastructure that are administered according to the standard
  • Name the five elements of a standards-based telecommunications bonding and grounding system
  • Define bonding conductor and its purpose
  • Lay out a wall field in a TR and in an ER
  • Trace the connectivity path from a desktop device to a centralized hub or controller, indicating the number of twisted pairs used by the application
  • Identify the elements of a residential telecommunications cabling system
  • List nine tests performed by the certification testing
