Description

Objective:

The course objective is to introduce the learner to complex motors. These motors include synchronous motors, multispeed motors, and special-application motors. Components such as braking, bearings, drive/clutch systems, and adjustable speed drives are also discussed. Finally, the course discusses troubleshooting and maintenance of motors.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define the difference between press-fit and push-fit installation
  • Describe how the rotor of a synchronous motor differs from the rotor of a squirrel-cage induction motor
  • List the types of relays used with synchronous motors
  • Explain the differences between pull-in torque, pull-out torque, and torque angle
  • Describe the control circuits required to start a synchronous motor
  • Describe the operation of friction brakes, plugging, electric brakes, dynamic brakes, and drives
  • Compare the different types of braking and understand the advantages and disadvantages of each type
  • Describe the operation of a two-speed consequent-pole motor
  • Explain how the speed of a Schrage motor is changed
  • Describe the difference between compelling circuit logic, accelerating circuit logic, and decelerating circuit logic
  • Explain how the variable frequency applied to an AC motor is created and applied
  • Explain how the variable voltage applied to a DC motor is created and applied
  • Describe the operation of inverter drives and vector drives
  • Describe the difference between rolling-contact and friction bearings
  • Explain how to mount a bearing
  • List various ways bearings can become damaged and describe how the type of damage can be identified through bearing failure analysis
  • Explain how flexible belts are used to transfer torque and change speed between a motor and a load
  • Describe the different types of gears and explain how chains and gears are used to transfer torque and change speed between a motor and a load
  • Explain how friction clutches and eddy-current clutches are able to connect a motor to or disconnect a motor from a load while the motor is running
  • Describe the factors to consider when placing a motor
  • Describe soft foot and explain how it affects anchoring and alignment
  • Explain how to troubleshoot AC and DC motors
  • Explain how to troubleshoot motor controls and circuits
  • Explain how to identify unmarked motor leads
  • Describe the operation of stepper motors, servomotors, and phase converters
  • Explain how universal motors are similar to DC series motors
  • Explain how a linear induction motor is similar to a standard AC induction motor
