Description

Objective:

The course objective is to familiarize students with the necessary skills to understand how semiconductor devices function. The objective of Level II is to provide a better understanding Semiconductors through hands-on lab exercises.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the basic functions of diodes and rectifiers found in semiconductors and list the characteristics of diodes
  • Understand how the following power supplies work in semiconductors: voltage, regulation, ripple voltage, full wave rectifiers, and bridge rectifier
  • Test or demonstrate ability to test diodes to determine opens, shorts, and leads
  • Demonstrate an understanding of schematic symbols and draw schematic diagrams
  • List the three main categories of photo-operated devices and describe applications for different optoelectronic devices
  • Identify differential and operational amplifiers
  • List different electronic control devices and circuits
  • Demonstrate how to test SCRs with the DMM, a DIAC, and the TRIAC with the DMM

General Topics:

  • Semiconductors: Semiconductor diode
  • Zener diodes and other special purpose diodes
  • Basic functions of diodes and rectifiers
  • Power supplies, filters, chokes, voltage regulators, dividers, and doublers
  • Transistors, light emitting diodes, lasers, and phototransistors
  • Electronic applications, optoelectronics and fiber optics
